Peyton Manning Division Preview: For the first time in the LHL, the Peyton Manning division saw a team win a 2nd division crown with Jordan retaining the top spot there. The division has had a lot of success in the league, and have added a Super Bowl trophy to that. Jordan climbed to the top step of the league winning the title over the Giants last season. The division has sent a team to the AFC Championship every season so far and Jordan will look to get back to at least that round again this season, but will have to hold off a much improved Denver team along with an always solid, high scoring Chargers team. The Raiders are likely the 4th best team here, but look to be competitive and could make a playoff run as well. Can Garrett finally climb to the top spot in the division? Can Nathan make the playoffs in his 2nd season? Can the Raiders get back to the playoffs? Can Jordan be the first repeat league winner?
Denver Broncos (Nathan): 2022 Record: 7-6
Nathan went through his first season in LHL pretty well. The team was competitive and he guided the team to an above .500 finish. The Broncos started the season off very strong, jumping out to a 5-1 record. Things after that did not go as well as down the stretch heading to the playoffs the team went 2-5 and ultimately missed the playoffs. I would say, Nathan learned a lot from his first go at the season in a dynasty league and figuring out real quick every week in this league is a challenge. That said, going into his sophomore season, Nathan will be optimistic with the right adjustments and right roster moves this Bronco team can make a loaded AFC playoff field this season. Nathan currently does have a decision to make at QB as he has Dak Prescott and Anthony Richardson and not enough cap space to carry 2 QBs this season, so 1 of those guys will have to make way before the season starts. It wasn’t certain that the Colts would put Anthony Richardson on the field to open the season, but as every day passes it is looking more and more likely that that will be the case. A position that needed work for the Broncos this off-season was RB and Nathan has made a few changes there to try and fix the position. D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson join the fold and help bolster the position that had Isaiah Spiller and Jaylen Warren returning. The position group had the 3rd lowest yards and 2nd lowest TD total from last season, so will the 2 additions be enough to help to bring the unit up the standings there? The WR room for Nathan was middle of the pack last season as they finished 11th in receptions, 13th in yards, and 11th in receiving touchdowns. Upgrading from Noah Brown to Mike Evans at WR will surely lift those stats to top 10 in the league in each stat and help this offense have a very strong and consistent unit. Along with Mike Evans, the Broncos have Michael Gallup, DeVonta Smith, Jerry Jeudy, Rashid Shaheed, Jalen Tolbert, and Calvin Austin. The last unit on offense for the Broncos is the TE spot and the unit is totally new with FA signing Noah Fant and rookie Luke Schoonmaker, replacing Kylen Granson. Hopefully the new faces at the position can supplement the WRs and the offense as a whole to make this a top 10 offense this season. Flipping to defense, the Broncos had a great season on that side being the 6th overall team in points last season. They were 7th in tackles, 21st in INTs, 4th in sacks, and 8th in forced fumbles. It was an off-season of turnover for the Broncos and on defense it starts at DL with Cam Jordan, Aaron Donald, Derrick Barnes, and Kingsley Enagbare departing and being replaced by Dexter Lawrence, Grady Jarrett and rookie Bryan Bresee, with the 1 hold over being standout Gregory Roussaeu. It should be another solid year of production from the position group for the Broncos with that quartet. Moving to LB, Drue Tranquill, Isaiah Simmons (seems to be moving to DB this season), and Eric Kendricks all return for another season in Denver. Leighton Vander Esch could be a very good addition to that unit to help the depth and top end production. At DB, Patrick Surtain, Donavon Wilson, and DaRon Bland all come back for the 2023 season, while Kaiir Elam was let go to make way for Jessie Bates. Bates will certainly be a strong upgrade to the position. The Broncos made very smart moves all off-season to rework this roster and bring in talent to challenge for a playoff spot. I think they will be in that race all season, but time will tell if it was enough to crack this tough AFC conference. Finishing 3rd last season and getting matchups against the other 3rd place finishers might be just the bonus over LA they need to move up in the division.
Projected Division Finish: 2nd
Indianapolis Colts (Jordan) 2022 Record: 11-2
WELCOMING YOUR 2022 LHL SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS THE INDIANAPOLIS COLTS!
Jordan has quickly established himself in the upper tier of teams and owners in LHL, as he swiftly turned this Colts roster from a chaser to one with a target on their back. After 2 10 or more wins seasons and a championship, Jordan will have a lot of work to do to stay on top of not only the league, but the AFC, as he has teams like Buffalo, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and others chomping at his heels to be the top dog in the conference. A huge transition for the team this season is going from the GOAT, Tom Brady, to highly touted rookie CJ Stroud. Can CJ settle quickly into NFL life and lead Houston in the NFL and Indianapolis in LHL? If he can be fantasy relevant, the talent around him on this Colts offense should be enough to keep Jordan dreaming of back to back titles all season long. Brady did have the Colts at #1 in passing yards, tied 6th in TDs, and tied 6th in fewest INTs, a tall ask of CJ to replace. With Saquon, CMC, and Mostert at RB, it is easy to understand why Jordan was #2 in rushing yards and #4 in TDs. Jordan isn’t satisfied with those #s though, as Sameje Perine was brought in to make it a very elite RB quartet for the 2023 season. The receiving group wasn’t to be outdone by the RBs though as the Colts were #2 in receptions, 7th in yards, and tied for 9th in TDs. Chris Godwin, Laviska Shenault, and Zay Jones will be back in the WR room for the 2023 season, while John Metchie will make his NFL debut after missing 2022 fighting cancer. Allen Lazard replaced Danny Gray and Tyler Boyd was traded away. The WR group seems to be just slightly downgraded this season, but not enough to worry Jordan, I would think. Breakout player Greg Dulcich returns at TE for the Colts and so does Hunter Henry. Jordan decided to replace Shane Zylstra with Logan Thomas to give him a more reliable 2nd or 3rd TE behind Dulcich. In 2022 the offense was the #1 scoring offense in the league, something Jordan is trying to retain. Being able to back the #1 offense with the #3 defense is a massive accomplishment and a clear reason why the Colts ended the season on top. The defense was 4th in tackles, 3rd in INTs, 10th in sacks, and 14th in FF. A well rounded unit indeed. At DL, the two guys that made up the unit last season, Javon Hargrave and Deatrich Wise come back for the new season, while Jordan added Christian Wilkins and rookie Will McDonald to the fold. Jordan brings back Bobby Wagner, Josey Jewell, and David Long at LB, while letting Jaylen Smith and Joe Thomas go. Robert Spillane was brought in through UFA, while Dorian Williams was drafted to give Jordan a solid 5 LB set up. The DB room remains mostly unchanged as Jayron Kearse, Amani Hooker, Ryan Neal, Keisean Nixon, and Jonathan Owens all enter the season on the roster. Adrian Amos is the lone DB to depart over the off-season for the Colts, while no replacement was brought in. Jordan took care of the difficult 1st place vs 1st place schedule last season, so I wouldn’t expect the same level of schedule to trip him up this season. The questions on the roster will be what I am watching for the Colts in their pursuit of another title. As it stands, the Colts are my Super Bowl favorites.
Predicted Division Finish: 1st
Las Vegas Raiders (Jacob) 2022 Record: 5-8
Jacob and his Raiders made the playoffs in 2021 as the 6th seed, so the hope for 2022 was to improve on that win total and potentially challenge Indy for the division title. As the season played out, the Raiders had to settle for a below .500 finish, the first such season for the Raiders in LHL. As it stands the team has decreased their win total by 2 wins each season. Not an ideal trend for the Raiders and Jacob and one he will most certainly look to end this season. Things started off poorly for this Raider offense with Russell Wilson struggling pretty much every week in his new Broncos offense. The offense was middle of the pack scoring the 13th most points in the league. Wilson managed to be tied 15th for passing TDs and 14th in passing yards. The RB room was 13th in rushing yards and TDs. Cordarrelle Patterson, Tyler Allgeier, Kenneth Gainwell, and Elijah Mitchell all return for the 2023 season for the Raiders, while Sony Michel was released. Rookies Zach Charbonnet and Deuce Vaughn will also be introduced into the fold this season giving Jacob 6 RBs to utilize this season. Will the 2 rookies be enough to boost the unit to the top 10 this season? Jacob rolls into the season with Brandon Aiyuk, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Keenan Allen, David Bell, and Randall Cobb at WR, and all of them were part of the team last season that was 9th in receptions and yards, and 12th in TDs. Robert Woods was allowed to leave, while no new WRs were brought in. Tyler Higbee was the sole TE on the roster in 2022 and will be the sole TE on the roster headed into 2023, so the question is will he be enough for Jacob at TE. While the offense was right at league average on the season, the defense did put in some solid work as they were able to score the 9th most points in the league. The team was 10th in tackles, 20th in sacks, 1st in INTs, and 20th in forced fumbles. Currently DeForest Buckner and Aaron Donald are the only 2 DL on the roster for Jacob, so the depth is a concern for the position right now. Jacob let BJ Hill and Dre’Mont Jones go in the off-season, and brought in the previously mentioned Aaron Donald. Moving over to the LB position Matt Milano, Jamin Davis, Josh Bynes, Damone Clark, and Alec Ogletree return to the defense, with Kyzir White replacing Jordan Hicks. Jacob brought back Minkah Fitzpatrick, Jimmie Ward, Kyler Gordon, Elijah Molden, and Darnell Savage at DB, while also adding Budda Baker to the mix. It was a 4th place division finish for the Raiders so can they capitalize on the fact that they are playing the other 4th place finishing teams and move up the AFC pecking order this season? It was a relatively quiet off-season for a team that is trending the wrong direction, but with Russell Wilson now playing under an offensive guru in Sean Payton, can he and this Raiders team make a turn back towards winning and help Jacob reclaim his winning ways?
Predicted Division Finish: 4th
Los Angeles Chargers (Garrett) 2022 Record: 7-6
Garrett continues to be the bridesmaid in the Peyton Manning Division, for the 3rd straight season it was a 2nd place division finish for him and his chargers. One has to wonder if the curse the real life Chargers have of not having late and post season success has rubbed off on Garrett’s iteration of the Chargers here. The team puts up points in abundance every season and almost weekly, but when crunch time comes the team just doesn’t perform to potential and Garrett is booted early from the playoffs. The team put up the 7th most points overall last season and also put up the 2nd most offensive points, but found a round 1 exit. With a tough AFC conference still being very top heavy and teams like Denver improving this off-season, Garrett will need to have his Chargers in top form yet again this season to stay in a playoff spot and try to knock the Colts off the top spot in the division and finally claim that elusive spot. Daniel Jones had a breakout 2022 season and a lot of came from a strong running season. Jones lead the Chargers to the 13th most passing yards and the 15th most passing TDs. The RB room and Daniel Jones were only able to net the 16th most rushing yards and 17th most rushing TDs, but things look much more optimistic this season as Rachaad White moves into the starting role in Tampa Bay, James Conner stays the lead back in Arizona, and Kendre Miller was drafted to boost the room. Hassan Haskins and Tyrion Davis-Price are also in the fold, but not likely to be fantasy relevant on their current squads. Garrett has consistently boasted a top end WR group and that was apparent again in 2022 with the team leading the league in every single receiving category, and none being close. The WR group that accomplished that was Davante Adams, CeeDee Lamb, Amari Cooper, and Parris Campbell, along with the RBs and two TEs of Mike Gesicki and Adam Troutman. Darnell Mooney was brought in to replace Parris Campbel, while the rest of the WR group was retained and Paku Nacua was also drafted in the rookie draft. Over at TE, Chigoziem Okonkwo was brought in as an upgrade over Adam Troutman. So Garrett was far from satisfied with just winning the receiving categories, he wants to run away with them this year. Having the 19th ranked defense played a massive factor in the shortcomings of the Chargers last season. His defense was able to tie for 2nd most forced fumbles, but on the flip side of turnovers had the 2nd fewest interceptions. The Chargers were tied 20th in sacks and 16th in tackles. Garrett is running it back with Jeffrey Simmons, Demarcus Lawrence, and Payton Turner at DL, while he replaced Jerry Tillery with Daron Payne, a move he hopes helps boost the unit and the defense as a whole. The LB position sees some change as Jayon Brown, Deion Jones, and Malik Harrison all departed this off-season and Bobby Okereke and Elandor Roberts were brought in to help reshape the unit and try to improve a struggling defense. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and Micah McFadden return at the LB position. The last position on the defense is the DB unit and the returning cast there is Jeremy Chinn, Antonio Winfield, Jaquan Brisker, Marcus Epps, and John Johnson. Garrett decided he liked having a DB with the last name Jackson on the roster as he replaced Kareem Jackson with Eddie Jackson. Garrett’s run of finishing 2nd in the division seems on the verge of ending with the Broncos and Raiders likely taking a step forward this season, but the Chargers still have a plethora of talent, so can Garrett keep this roster in the playoffs for another season?
Predicted Division Finish: 3rd
Denver Broncos (Nathan): 2022 Record: 7-6
