Junior Seau Division Preview: In 2022 it was boom or bust for the Junior Seau, the Bills finished as a top 3 AFC team, but the other 3 teams all finished inside the bottom 4 of the entire league with Miami in last place, Pats in 22nd, and the Jags in 21st. Travis has been at the top of the league every season and looks set to continue that for a while, he will be the mile wide favorite for the division. Can the other 3 make a big enough improvement to make Travis sweat this season or even make the other teams in the playoff hunt worry about them too?
Buffalo Bills (Travis): 2022 Record: 11-2
Travis claimed his 3rd straight division title, still the only team to have won the division every season so far in LHL, and while the division has improved, the betting odds would be on the Bills to make it 4 straight this season as well. Despite an 11-2 record in 2022, the Bills had to enter the playoffs as the 3 seed and after winning their round 1 matchup against the 6 seed, Denver Broncos, the Bills had to square off against fellow 11-2 team, the Indianapolis Colts who they had lost to earlier in the season. It would be an 0-2 season for the Bills against the Colts, with the Bills making an exit in the divisional round this past season after winning the 2021 LHL Super Bowl. Travis clearly has this roster set up to be a contender year in and year out and that lines up to ring true again here in 2023. Travis will look to sit his squad at the top of the conference yet again and make a run at his 2nd Super Bowl trophy. Travis ended last season with the 2nd best scoring team overall, 3rd best offense, and 2nd best defense. This team puts up a lot of points on a weekly basis and has done so every year of the league. Travis ran out a gauntlet of QBs last season starting with Dak, moving to Wentz, then came Kyler, all in the first 3 weeks of the season. Colt McCoy took the spot in week 11, Mike White finished the regular season, Kyler got the start in round 1, all before Derek Carr was the QB for the AFC Divisional round loss against the Colts. With 6 different QBs running the offense the team finished 17th in passing yards, 15th in touchdowns, and 23rd in INTs. Travis will hope 2023 is more straightforward at the position as he has brought in the highly controversial, for obvious and not good reason, figure DeShaun Watson. Can Watson return to his Houston play and be a top 10 QB for Travis here? Like QB, the RB room has been a revolving door of names for Travis, but he has figured out how to get guys good enough to put up points at the position. The team was 7th in yards and 6th in touchdowns, with a group that was led by Tony Pollard and breakout rookie Isaih Pacheco. For the 2023 season Jeff Wilson, who is on the IR currently and Cam Akers will be back from last season while Tony Pollard, James Robinson, and Zonovan Knight left this off-season. The leaving RBs were replaced by Tank Bigsby, Kenneth Walker, and Rico Dowdle. The receiving group finished 5th in receptions, 3rd in yards, and 2nd in touchdowns, which was led in large part by Justin Jefferson and Ja’Marr Chase. Coming into 2023, Ja’Marr has been moved but replaced by Amon-Ra St. Brown. The returnees are Justin Jefferson and Rondale Moore. Parris Campbell and rookies Charlie Jones and Trey Palmer were brought in to replace Jamal Agnew, Quez Watkins, and Darnell Mooney. To supplement the WR room, Travis had George Kittle and Daniel Bellinger at TE, and both will be back this season for Travis. With the 2nd best defense in the league last season, Travis will look to run that back and improve by 1 spot, to do so he will need a strong unit and we will start at DB to see how he stacks up. Derwin James leads the unit and has Julian Love, L’Jarius Sneed, and Cam Taylor-Britt back as well. DeShon Elliott was the only DB that did not make it back to the roster for this season. Moving to the front line of the defense, Travis will pair Nick Bosa with Alex Highsmith and rely on Sam Williams behind them. Nick Bosa was brought in and Sam Hubbard was moved on. The final group to look at is the LB unit and that one is led by Devin White, Logan Wilson, Azeez Al-Shaair, all back from last season. Kaden Elliss also returns while Elandor Roberts was allowed to leave this off-season. A solid group as a whole, but did lose a touch of depth and Travis will hope that does not hurt him this season. The middle part of the schedule for the Bills will be a brutal one with the matchups against the other division winners, but shouldn’t be enough to derail them from the division win.
Predicted Division Finish: 1st
Jacksonville Jaguars (Derek): 2022 Record: 4-9
The Jags led by Derek have just sort of struggled to get things going in an upward trajectory and sustain that momentum. The first season they had 1 win, but followed it up with a much improved 6 win season and things looked to be trending toward a playoff appearance last season for the team. Things got off to a slow start and Derek decided it was time to hit the reset button and moved off Patrick Mahomes last season, netting himself Justin Fields, Devin Bush and a couple of 1st round picks. Justin Fields hit a massive breakout stretch right after the trade, so Derek might have struck gold on that trade if he can nail the 2 picks. Finishing up the season the team went 4-9 and ended up with the 4th overall pick in the rookie draft. The team finished with the 20th most points, were the 20th best offense, and 21st best defense. So going into the off-season this team needed help across the entire roster. As mentioned Mahomes was the QB to start the season, but Justin Fields came back in a trade and will be back to open the 2023 season. The two combined for the 18th most passing yards, the 4th most touchdowns, and the 12th fewest INTs. The Jaguars did have a strong rushing attack in 2022 as the team finished with the 3rd most rushing yards and 7th most touchdowns. The guys that led that charge were Brian Robinson, Isiah Pacheco, DeeJay Dallas, and Cam Akers (before he was also traded away like Mahomes). Coming into 2023 the group will be manned by the same 3 guys, Pacheco, Robinson, and Dallas, so can these 3 and Fields replicate the running success the team had last season? It was a rough season for the receiving core for Dereke as they were 23rd in receptions and yards and tied for 22nd in touchdowns. An area that Derek will absolutely need to remedy this season to climb back up the standings. For the season, Deebo Samuel and Jameson Williams (in week 9) are the 2 returning to the team, while rookies Quentin Johnston and Kayshon Boutte come into the fold to try and improve things, along with Deven Thompkins. Helping the WRs at TE are Kyle Pitts and Irv Smith, both of whom were in Jacksonville last season, the only difference is that Irv moved from Minnesota to Cincinnati. Like the offense, the defense needed a lot of help this season and starting at DL, the guys that got brought back are Jonathan Greenard, James Smith-Williams, Javon Kinlaw, Grover Stewart, and Arnold Ebiketie. A lot of depth for the DL position that was also boosted by drafted Will Anderson. Derek will also be able to utilize a few of these guys at the LB spot adding some flexibility to the mix. Over at the LB spot Anthony Walker, Zaven Collins, Devin Bush, and Joe Schobert (currently a FA) return for the 2023 season. Rookie Drew Sanders was added to the fold to replace veteran Matt Judon. Finally we have the DB position and the players back this season are Justin Simmons, Darrick Forrest, and Kyle Dugger. Keanu Neal and rookie Brian Branch were brought in and replaced Tre’Davious White and Kendall Fuller. Both sides of the ball saw small tweaks to the team, so were they enough with guys staying healthy this season to help the Jags move up the AFC pecking order? Despite a 4th overall pick last season, the Jags will take all the other 2nd place division finishers this season which could affect how successful their season winds up being.
Predicted Division Finish: 3rd
Miami Dolphins (Trey): 2022 Record: 2-11
For Trey and his Dolphins the 2022 season was about entering a rebuild and amassing as many picks as possible. Trey got his team to the #1 overall pick, but instead of keeping it and taking Bijan, Trey traded down with Arizona and netted himself more picks and ended up with 7 rookie picks this past rookie draft. So heading into the new season at least a quarter of his team will be rookies and he also has 6 more picks waiting this coming off-season. The team with the changes last season went on to finish as the 22nd overall scoring team with the 18th best offense and the worst defense in the league. For the 2022 season, Trey had to manage the NE QB situation with Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe, which was a volatile one for fantasy and hurt him on a few occasions when both guys played. The two had the team with the 16th most passing yards, tied 18th most touchdowns, and tied 14 in INTs. Moving to 2023, Trey ditched the NE QBs and traded for Sam Howell and signed his backup Jacoby Brissett to try his hand with the Washington guys this season. The rushing attack was only good for 21st best in yards and tied 20th in touchdowns. The two RBs to open the season on the roster will be James Cook and rookie Jaleel McLaughlin. D’Andre Swift was on the roster last season but was traded away over the off-season, so will the slight lack of depth hurt the Dolphins there this season? On the receiving side of the offense, the Dolphins ranked 16th in receptions and yards, and were tied for 12th in touchdowns. The leader of the group Terry McLaurin is back for another season alongside Kendrick Bourne. Trey did add rookies Marvin Mims Jr and Josh Downs while Anthony Schwartz was let go during the off-season. There is a trio of TEs on the roster to open the season and all 3 were on the roster last season. Cade Otton, Isaiah Likely, and Hunter Long all will play a part at the position for Trey in 2023. With the worst defense in 2022, the only way Trey can take this defense is up in 2023 and will try to do that with changes at every level. Standout rookie Aidan Hutchinson is back on the DL as is Josh Allen. Rookie Lukas Van Ness comes in to replace Trey Hendrickson. Down to the LB spot Nik Bonitto, Jack Sanborn, Mack Wilson, and Channing Tindall will be back for the 2023 season while rookies Jack Campbell, Byron Young, and Daiyan Henley will all be here to try and give a boost to a defense that needs it. Garret Wallow, Harold Landry, and Rashad Weaver were all moved on to make way for the 3 rookies. Finally we see the DBs that will be here for 2023 that were here in 2022 are Bryan Cook, Roger McCreary, and Marcus Williams. The rookie Joey Porter Jr was added to take the spot of Denzel Ward. New faces at every level of the defense along with the guys that produced at those positions last year should result in a better finishing spot for this defense in 2023 and hopefully help Trey start to move this team in the right direction. A 5 week stretch against the other teams that finished in last place in their division could be a boost to the team and help them pick up a few more wins.
Projected Division Finish: 4th
New England Patriots (Brian): 2022 Record: 3-10
After a trip to the inaugural LHL Super Bowl things have not gone as smoothly for Brian and his Patriots. The following season the team picked up an extra loss with the extra game and moved to 6-7 and missed the playoffs in 2021. In 2022 it was an even further step back as the team went 3-10 and just never looked competitive over the regular season. Injuries to Lamar and other pieces really hindered this team along with some lack of production for other key guys. With that said Lamar is back, the RB room is improved and the roster looks like it could take a step back in the right direction. Time will tell how big a step forward that will be for the Pats and Brian though. The team in 2022 finished as the 21st best team as a whole, while the offense was 23rd best and the defense finished as the 11th best unit in the league. With the defense being so much better, we will start on that side of the ball for the Pats. The DL going into the season is manned by BJ Hill, Dre’Mont Jones, Zach Allen, rookie Calijah Kancey, and Uchenna Nwosu. Nwosu is the only carryover from last season while Kenny Clark, Josh Sweat, Arik Armstead, and Stephon Tuitt were on the roster but moved on from this off-season! At LB, CJ Mosley, Devin Lloyd, and Mykal Walker will run it back for the Pats and the new face on the team is Luke Masterson, while Todd Davis, Nick Kwiatkoski, Andrew Van Ginkel, and Hamsah Nasirildeen left for this season. At DB, Brian will have DeShon Elliott, Kareem Jackson, Nick Scott, and Chuck Clark, when he comes off the IR, for this season. The only departure this off-season was Kenny Moore. The side of the ball that needs the most help this season is the offense. Thanks to missing the final 5 weeks of the regular season, Lamar finished the season as the QB13, and was only able to lead the Pats to the 23rd most passing yards, the 18th most touchdowns, but did tie for the fewest interceptions. Lamar is back for the 2023 season and has a few new weapons to play with at WR, so can he stay healthy and use the new weapons to have a bigger passing season? For the rushing attack the team finished 15th in yards and tied 17th in touchdowns. Despite having Austin Ekeler and Lamar running for the team, that performance was less than ideal and one that Brian went about fixing this off-season. The RB room will now be Austin Ekeler, Alexander Mattison, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Chubba Hubbard. Adding two RBs that project to carry a lead or sizable role in their offenses will certainly help the Pats climb the rushing rankings this season. For the Pats the WR room like the rest of the offense was lackluster in 2022. The team finished 23rd in receptions and last in yards and touchdowns. The group last season was Velus Jones, Hunter Renfrow, Allen Robinson, Wandale Robinson, and Jalen Guyton. The group that starts 2023 will be Noah Brown, Hunter Renfrow, and Wandale Robinson. A unit that lacks depth and upside, so time will tell how the Pats attack this season for the position and if there are any changes to be made. At TE to work with the WRs is Will Dissly and Tucker Kraft, who are both new faces to replace Donald Parham, Chris Herndon, and Blake Jarwin. Brian is itching to get his team back on track and seems willing to make moves to try and make that happen, will the work pay off this season?
Predicted Division Finish: 2nd
